Sermon on the Mount
Questions from Sunday 4 September
Introduction and Overview
The aim of these questions is that we would consider the Sunday teaching in more detail, taking time to explore God’s Word further and seeing how it applies to our lives and the lives of those around us.
- As you read the Sermon on the Mount and the chapters that come before, what is the context of this sermon, i.e.:
- Who is Jesus speaking to?
- Where is it set? (it might be useful to find a map of Israel in New Testament times – the internet is a great thing!)
- At what point in Jesus’ ministry is the sermon set?
- John Stott refers to the Sermon as “Christian Counter Culture”. As you look at your life what differences do you see (lifestyle, values, priorities) from those around you who don’t know Christ?
- Martin Lloyd-Jones talked of the Sermon as “an elaboration” of the new commandment to love one another as Jesus has loved us. As you read through the Sermon how does Jesus say that we should love each other, and how do this relate to how Jesus has loved us? What does this mean for us in our Life Groups
- The main point from last Sunday’s sermon was that we need to view the sermon as a whole and that in doing so we see a definite flow from character to conduct. Jesus points the way to a radical Kingdom life but he makes it clear that it is rooted in who we are in Christ. Read Ephesians 2:8-10 and note how Paul backs this theme up.
- How does your own Christian experience relate to this?
- As you read the Sermon on the Mount and the Kingdom life set out by Jesus, do you believe that you personally are able to live this life in Christ?
- Do you want to live this life?
